The Faulty Flipper is the informal home of the BOK Masters Squad. Masters swimming is for adult swimmers who do not mind getting their hair wet, want to get very fit, and to swim hard hoping to improve technique, get a bit faster, and have a laugh between gasps for air.

The Faulty Flipper – Kirklees Masters Newsletter
Edition 2 [Dec 1990]
Where are you going?
There are many good reasons for swimming; they vary from recovery from ill health by gentle exercise, to training for competition. Do you know where all this deep /shallow /deep /pant pant /shallow/deep /shallow end stuff is leading (apart from back to the deep end)? Do you just enjoy the pain? As our squad grows the room available for different classes of swimmers will be reduced. The style of training will help all energetic swimmers, but is designed to train you for competitive sprinting. We are here to compete in Masters swimming events.
If you haven’t entered a meet yet it seems a daunting and unenticing prospect. I never expected to enjoy it, or to feel so competitive. Competing is the best way of measuring your progress, and most of all of inspiring you to try harder.
Jim says he wouldn’t enter you in a race where you would be embarrassed. I say you might also take along an extra dark and large pair of goggles, a pink swim hat, and if swimming ‘fly’, a pair of armbands just in case. The simple truth is however that the way in which these events are organised leaves little possibility of you being too embarrassed. Each race matches swimmers with a similar time. Some of the competitors are of a very high standard, and others are, well, shall we just say others. It is no secret that in the three races in which I acquired a silver medal, I also came last!
Swimmers Complaints 2 Tendonitis
Tendonitis is that sore feeling in the back of your arms. It makes it difficult to raise your arms. Yes, this is the one where it is uncomfortable to put your shirt on. Some say it is caused by swimming too much. Jim, who knows about these things, says this is nonsense and that it probably comes from sleeping too much, and that the cure is, you guessed it, ‘a bit of hard work’
The prevalence of this disease among the squad can be seen by how, at each and every opportunity, people fail to put their hands up to volunteer to demonstrate back stroke tumble turns, butterfly or indeed for anything. You can almost see the anguish on the faces of all those who wanted ever so much to come forward, but couldn’t quite lift an arm.
Volunteers wanted
That, as they say, means you. Wanted, someone to help carry this burden, doing some writing. Someone to collate times for our group. We need a volunteer to co-ordinate travel to the various meets.
Kirklees Swim
On Sunday 11 November, the Masters took a small part in the BOK distance swim (four times round the ring road). Part of the proceeds went to Martin House (a charity close to your editor’s heart). The task was to chase each other for an hour.
Simon managed 136 lengths of the large pool (2m 1013y); David 122(2m 546y); Trevor and Angus 120 (2m 480y) John did 156 lengths in the small pool (2m 380yds) Carol 109 (2m 109y), Trish, Pat, Angela 97
The younger swimmers in A B and even C squad managed further in distance, but we probably won on the total volume of water displaced, and made for less wear and tear on the lane ropes!
Nationals
Simon and Trish were brave enough to venture out all the way to Cardiff. Simon took home a Bronze in the 100m Free (59.65s), a silver with the Camp Hill (who they?) Mob Free team, a silver in the 50m Free (26.22) and a gold with the same mob in the Medley team event.
Trish got a silver, but how is not yet known!.

Backwash
There have been complaints that this journal is written too much tongue in cheek. I am afraid I am stuck that way after trying to breath to the side on Fly. I chose the wrong side just as Simon glode past.
