The Faulty Flipper is the informal home of the BOK Masters Squad. Masters swimming is for adult swimmers who do not mind getting their hair wet, want to get very fit, and to swim hard hoping to improve technique, get a bit faster, and have a laugh between gasps for air.

Edition 3  Dec 1990
Christmas Do
On 12 December after training please scrape yourselves off the tiles, fight your way through the showers and regale yourselves in a suitably dapper manner for enjoyment. Meet at the entrance to Cambridge Road for instructions from Alison.
Please note that your editor only defends drunk drivers at great expense. Simon performs his tasks with equal disdain. If you want to drink, please leave your car at home.
Sinful Swimming
It is probably true that there is much less sin going on (or at least being thought about) since the separate departures of Simmo and Jean Francois.
Nevertheless what you are doing is basically sinful. Theo logians will tell you that pride is the first and the greatest sin. If it isn’t pride that motivates you lot, I will have to stand alone and confess that it keeps me going. You ask Jim if modesty is a virtue.
Swimming is also entirely selfish. With the singular exception of Jim, whose generosity in just turning out is matched only by the ven geance he wreaks upon arrival, each of us is in this only for ourselves. For the younger, single swimmers this may not be a problem, but for those with families, the dedication to swimming should be matched by greater attention to the family outside the pool.
No doubt lust should get a mention here. A mention only however because after the usual training session, climbing into bed and dreaming is about all we can hope for. See also above under Simmo and JF.
Swimmers Complaints 3 Jim
Say no more.
Pub
For anyone who didn’t know you will be very welcome at the Fleece at Lindley after Tuesdays training sessions. You will be even more welcome with a tenner in your pocket. A special prize may be awarded to anyone who can listen to three of Jim’s Navy jokes without squirming noticeably.
Ask someone for directions if you need them.
Volunteers wanted
Noreen Edery is our representative on the BOK committee. Whether through cowardice, common sense, ignorance or lassitude, she still hasn’t been invited to any meetings.
Kevan is your representative on the Yorkshire ASA Masters Committee. For the rest see above under ‘Noreen’.
Distance Swimmers
Despite Jim’s best endeavours we thankfully still have several swimmers who see themselves as distance swimmers rather than sprinters. This is all relative – Angus sees 100m as a distance event; John Chaplin can’t manage his three Weetabix until he has swum 5,000m. Surely more of our triathletes should be taking part in these marathons even if only to keep Jim happy (which is reason enough for any man). Anyway just for you there will be the distance event at Liverpool in February. This is the one for you. Hands up any volunteers for the 1,500m medley relay (fly leg).
By the way Harry Barrow, former master and brick built triathlete managed 1hr 25m 41s in the Leeds Marathon. Jim will be pleased to know that this is a worse time than he did when training with us lot! Gary (who has just changed his name from Anthony without telling me) managed 1h 27m dead. John and Gary are trying again at Derby on 8 December.
Nationals – Cardiff
Trish finally owned up to how she won her silver medal at the National Championships at Cardiff. She had a time of 85.89s at 100m backstroke. Brilliant.
CALENDAR
December 1990
9 Sunday Milton Keynes. I was going to put in the results for this, but common sense and the weather put everyone off apart from me. I tried to get there and failed. I did manage to get a good kip on the M1.
25 Christmas, Jim says you can have a day off.
January 1991
1 Like a horse, you are now one year older as a swimmer. Who is going up in age groups? David S (to D) Noreen (to D) Yvonne?
16 Closing date for Sunderland
18-20 Swiss Cottage Masters meet. 36.66 pool. Sounds good, but a long way away.
25 Closing Date for Liverpool Distance meet For details ask David S or Kevan.
February 1991
16 Liverpool – Open Distance Meet 200m to 1500m. This must be the one for all the tri-athletes to have a bash at.
23 Sunderland Masters Sprint meet. All 50m races.
March 1991
Stockport. Has the advantage of being closer than many other meets.
29-31 Coventry 50m pool. Providing ‘goodie bags’ whatever they are. Still this sounds a nice way to get away from the family for Easter (0203 691088 for details)
April 1991
6 Closing date Darlington
Richmond sprint meet
May 1991
11 Darlington – Nice pool well run meet. Afternoon start
18/19 Yorkshire Championships. Your chance to peg a place in the Yorkshire team (or to lose it). Simon says ‘Moooove it’ to get here. This is the big one.
June 1991
Leeds Open
July 1991
August 1991
September 1991
Midland Counties Championships
4-8 European Masters at Cardiff. For those who know not the meaning of hubris.
North Eastern Counties championships at Newcastle?
October 1991
November 1991
? Chester. Lets hope they have fewer swimmers and more loos. Nice because the 25 yards pool makes all the distances shorter. Some very good swimmers in startling counterpoint to the organisation
