BOK Meeting 16 Jan
Things are looking up, I thought, as I walked into a room full of men. Alas, I was in the wrong meeting – this was football not swimming! Shame. Still, got to the right one in the end.
Membership Last year about 20 of us joined and annual membership fees (1991 – £6.00). This money goes to BOK. Your training fees (£12.00 a month) go to Kirklees MC, paying for pool time and Jim. Masters are encouraged to join BOK – there are benefits. One of us got a refund of the exam fee on the preliminary coaches course fee.
Travel to meets. Only when swimmers compete as a team and there are a sufficient numbers will a coach be put on. In this case swimmers travel free of charge. Spectators pay reasonable amount. Open meets (which all ours are) are not seen as a good case for subsidy.
Promotion. BOK have just set up an 8-strong team to organise promotion, fund raising etc. Anyone interested is invited to attend the first meeting 7.30pm Wed 6 Feb at Cambridge Road, disco room.
The next committee meeting will be on 20 Feb. Pass anything you want to be raised to YOUR REP Noreen the Brave
Martin Mosey
On 23 January Martin Mosey, BOK’s head coach came down to talk the assembled squad. Having just been softened up with 500 yards fly (yes, I thought Wednesday was stroke night as well), we were a walk over.
He complimented you on your commitment and how far we had progressed under Jim’s gentle tutelage. It was Martin’s idea and push that started the Masters, with able early support from among others Simon Garside. Jim took the idea by the scruff of the neck and made it come alive. The size of the squad now and the smiling faces at the end of each session are ample justification of that idea. So, next time you have to do 500yds fly, don’t curse Jim. thank Martin.
Excuses Competition
Your chance to win a (very small) prize. Please submit your best swimming excuse to David. Jim says he has heard them all. I doubt that. An extra prize might even be awarded for one that works!
Complaint 5 The Verruca
This little blighter has long been a source of embarrassment pain and humiliation for the swimmer. Beware the tell tale plastic sock! According to an article in ‘Swimming Times’ for which I accept no responsibility, such socks are no longer required. I never had one, honest, so I can’t say if they are painful. Perhaps someone out there would care to pen an article for the next Flipper called ‘Veruccas – I fought the battle and won’
World Championships
You may have noticed the World Swimming Championships taking place in Perth. They signalledthe emergence of China and Hungary as leading swimming nations, following only the US.
‘Hungarian’ breast stroke, where the hands are recovered almost in a dive over the water, seems to have made its mark. Though an American won the 200m, he has a Hungarian trainer. The best race was the 1500m where over 4 seconds was clipped off the old 1983 world record. Also someone dipped under 2 minutes for the first time in the 200m IM.
Britain got two medals, Adrian Moorhouse a silver (100m Breast) and Nick Gillingham a bronze (200m Breast). Neither appeared particularly Hungarian. Let’s hear it for Kevan Brownsjyiz and Louis Listerovski.

Technique
I am not qualified to write about swimming technique. If your first thought is ‘I can do better’; then please do.
Basic principles1 Pushing water backwards pushes you forward. That is the only direction you want to go, so energy expended pushing in other directions is usually wasted. Think about each movement you make. Is it pushing directly backwards. If no, why not?
2 Each length starts with an almost free input of speed, either a push or a dive. Make the very most of it. It takes much, much, more effort to regain that initial speed than to maintain it or to decelerate gently. Push hard off the wall and kick hard as you leave the wall. Your first breath will do most to slow you down; delay it as long as you can.
CALENDAR
For entry forms and entries, please see Wendy Offord, Trish Mellor, Kevan Brown or Simon Garside.
If you want a route map to any of the meets, please ask David. If you want to go and need a lift, ask. Most meets have facilities where your kids could swim through the day, but these days are long.
